Senior Software Engineer-Marketplace

Framingham, Massachusetts, United States

Remote/On-site On-site Job ID 73956 Category Technology, E-Commerce & Data Science Date posted 09/02/2026 Pay Range $98,000 - $136,000 plus annual incentive

Staples Digital Solutions is building the technology that powers how customers shop, how products move, and how marketplace and pricing decisions are made at scale. The Marketplace team lists Staples products on Amazon, Walmart and Best Buy, prices them automatically in response to live market signals, enforces pricing policy, and monitors order and marketplace health across cloud and on-prem environments.

As a Senior Software Engineer-Marketplace, you'll be helping to lead the engineering efforts for the real-time pricing engine capability: the revenue-critical system that reprices Staples' marketplace catalog in real time, enforces MAP and margin floors, and publishes prices to the marketplaces where our customers already shop. As a senior individual contributor on this capability, you'll be responsible for its architecture and direction, set the engineering bar, and partner with product, data science, marketplace operations, and platform engineering to turn complex pricing and optimization logic into reliable production systems.

What you'll be doing:

  • Designing, developing, and operation of the real-time pricing engine: a highly scalable, low-latency distributed system that reprices the marketplace catalog and publishes millions of price updates.

  • Involved in the full lifecycle of the pricing capability, including architecture, design reviews, development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement.

  • Build backend microservices, price-publishing pipelines, and production-grade pricing and policy-enforcement algorithms using modern engineering practices and Java-based technologies.

  • Design and operate the integrations that push prices to marketplaces and ingest signals from them, including messaging platforms (Solace) and the Amazon SP-API.

  • Enforce pricing policy in code at scale: MAP rules, margin floors, and guardrails that protect both margin and brand relationships.

  • Build and optimize high-throughput stream and batch pipelines that support repricing, analytics, and optimization workloads.

  • Partner with product, data science, and business teams to translate complex pricing and marketplace needs into scalable technical solutions.

  • Implement cloud-native and hybrid solutions on Azure and AKS using modern design patterns such as microservices and reactive systems.

  • Troubleshoot complex distributed systems issues and proactively improve the performance, scalability, resiliency, and reliability of a system that runs continuously.

  • Help raise the engineering bar across the marketplace team by mentoring less experienced engineers and contributing to shared standards, reusable patterns, and knowledge-sharing.

What you bring to the table:

  • Experience developing/maintaining a revenue-critical system, with initiative and follow-through from concept to production support.

  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to build strong relationships across technical and business teams.

  • Analytical thinking and creative problem-solving for complex, non-routine engineering challenges.

  • Clear communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • A continuous-improvement mindset and commitment to building maintainable, resilient, and scalable software.

  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with evolving priorities and meaningful business impact.

What's needed- Basic Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of progressively complex software engineering experience developing applications or services with Java and the Java tech stack.

  • Designing or building scalable, fault-tolerant distributed systems.
  • Implementing microservices using Spring or Spring Boot.
  • Experience developing solutions with at least one distributed database (i.e. Cosmos DB, Couchbase, MongoDB).
  • Proven experience working with at least one relational database such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
  • Experience working and collaborating in Agile software development environments.
  • Strong experience working with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, or cloud-native deployment practices.

What's needed- Desired Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.

  • 1 or more years of eCommerce fulfillment, marketplace, inventory, supply chain, or order fulfillment domain experience.

  • Experience building real-time pricing, bidding, optimization, or other low-latency decisioning systems.

  • Integrating third-party marketplace or commerce APIs such as the Amazon SP-API.

  • Leading technical workstreams or mentoring engineers as a senior individual contributor.

  • Experience integrating distributed messaging solutions such as Solace or Azure Event Hubs.

  • Developing or optimizing production-grade stream or batch data pipelines.

  • Designing and launching production systems on Microsoft Azure, including AKS and Kubernetes.

  • Experience integrating machine learning models, forecasting tools, or optimization algorithms into production systems.

We Offer:

  • Inclusive culture with associate-led Business Resource Groups

  • 22 days of PTO and Holiday Schedule (7 observed paid holidays + 1 floating holiday)

  • Online and Retail Discounts, Company Match 401(k), Physical and Mental Health Wellness programs, and more!
